Debt Descent Terms of Use

The plain-language terms for using Debt Descent, the private debt-payoff planner for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Last updated: October 8, 2026

These are the terms for using Debt Descent, the debt-payoff planner I make for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I’m Sean Mandable, and I build it on my own. I’ve kept these terms short and plain. By using the app, you agree to them.

What Debt Descent is

Debt Descent helps you plan how to pay off your debts. You enter your debts, balances, rates, and payments (or read them from a statement on your device), pick a payoff method like Snowball or Avalanche, and the app shows you a plan and an estimated debt-free date. You can log payments and watch your progress against that plan.

The app doesn’t connect to your bank or your lenders. It doesn’t move money, make payments, or talk to anyone on your behalf. Everything it knows about your debts comes from you: what you type in, import, or confirm from a statement.

It’s a planning tool, not advice

Debt Descent is not financial, legal, or tax advice, and I’m not a financial advisor, credit counselor, lawyer, or tax professional. The app does math on the numbers you give it. It can’t know your whole situation. When it shows what to pay on each debt, that’s what the payoff method you picked would do, not a recommendation for you.

Before you make a big decision, like stopping a payment, consolidating, refinancing, or enrolling in a debt management plan, please talk to your lender or a qualified professional.

Skipping or deferring a payment in the app only changes your plan. It doesn’t change what you owe, and it doesn’t tell your lender anything. A missed payment can still bring late fees, extra interest, or a mark on your credit, depending on your lender’s terms.

Projections are estimates

The debt-free date, interest totals, payoff order, the extra that Pick a debt-free date works out, and every other projection in the app are estimates. They’re only as good as what you enter, and your lender’s real math can differ from the app’s model. Here are a few things that can make them differ:

  • how your lender calculates interest (average daily balance, posting dates, compounding)
  • fees, penalty rates, and rate changes
  • promotional rates, deferred interest, and when they end
  • payments that post on a different day, or for a different amount, than you planned

When the statement reader or the paystub reader fills in a field, check it against the page before you save. The app shows you every field for this reason. Your lender’s statement is always the final word on what you owe. The free calculators on this site are estimates in the same way.

Your data

Your data stays on your devices and in your own iCloud. I never receive it, and I can’t see it. The Privacy Policy has the details.

That also means I can’t recover your data for you. iCloud sync keeps your devices in step, but it isn’t a backup. Deleting a debt removes it everywhere. Keep your own backup with Export to JSON now and then.

Files you export are yours to look after. A JSON backup carries your whole plan, and so does the plan PDF (and a payment history PDF, if you pick Include my plan), so only send them to people you’d share your plan with.

Purchases and refunds

Debt Descent is free to download. Debt Descent Pro is a one-time in-app purchase with no subscription. Apple handles every purchase through the App Store under Apple’s own terms, and I never see your payment details.

Refunds are handled by Apple, not me. If you need one, request it from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com (opens in new tab). If something about Pro isn’t working, please write to me first, because I’d like to fix it!

Your license to use the app

Debt Descent is licensed to you, not sold, under Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (opens in new tab). These terms sit alongside that agreement. If the two ever disagree about your license to use the app, Apple’s agreement wins.

Changes to the app

I’m always working on Debt Descent, so features will be added and changed over time, and now and then one may be removed. I’ll do my best to keep your data and the things you rely on working, but I can’t promise the app will always be available or will always work the same way.

No warranty

I work hard to get the math right, but Debt Descent is provided “as is” and “as available,” without any warranty of any kind, to the extent the law allows. That means I don’t promise that the app will be error-free, that it will always be available, or that its projections will match what actually happens with your debts.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, I’m not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages from using Debt Descent or not being able to use it. That includes decisions you make based on the app, late fees, interest, changes to your credit, and lost data.

If I’m ever found liable for anything anyway, my total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for Debt Descent Pro, or US$50, whichever is greater.

Some places don’t allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing here takes away rights you have under consumer protection laws where you live.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Changes to these terms

If these terms ever change, the updated version will be posted here with a new date. If you keep using Debt Descent after that, the new terms apply.
